2017 Shepherds Harvest Festival — Sold all but one

Saturday at Shepherds Harvest Festival was a glorious day, lots of warmth, sunshine and new and old customers. Once again we had a sell-out morning. Leaving the festival at 1:30 p.m. with just one fleece left and balls of roving. Oh My is our last fleece available. He’s a wether that was meant to be a market lamb but instead became a babysitter to a ram lamb that was healing up from a dog mauling last fall.

Oh My didn’t keep his jacket on and has a bit of dry vegetative matter in his fleece. He’s got a nice staple, a beautiful crimp and he’s black (a bit of sun fade on the tips). We marked him down in price to $70. First come, first served. Let us know if you are interested.

SOLD OUT

Harvest Fest 2016We had another good year at the Shepherds Harvest Festival at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Lake Elmo. It was a “brisk” day not only for sales but temperature wise. We were outside under a canopy between Buildings C & D. We sold all of our fleece by 1:30 on Saturday. Thank you to all of our customers. We appreciate your support of our little family farm. See you next year.

Another great Shepherds Harvest Festival. Thank you!

With much thanks to all of our customers – old and new, that we met and talked with on Saturday, May 16th at the 2015 Shepherds Harvest Festival in Lake Elmo.

We appreciate your support of our flock and farm. We didn’t sell out and returned to the farm with four fleece — Lanny, Qwen, Clyde and Silver. All are pureblood Corriedales. Lanny and Qwen are big big white fleece with a beautiful crimp and stable length. We could divide the fleece in smaller amounts for anyone interested. Clyde is natural colored fleece, a bit stinky, as boys are prone to be but will wash up nicely. Clyde and Lanny have brought our flock great Corriedale fleece genetics. Silver is a beautiful gray, nice crimp but a shorter stable. Sliver’s been serving as grandma to our unbred yearling ewes this past winter. Email us if you have an interest.

Measuring Ones Wealth

Measuring Ones Wealth

Measuring Ones Wealth

Joy of joys! It’s that time of the year where we at the farm get to dig into our two year old composted manure pile and spread it on a field. The dark, moist, slightly fragrant mixture of soiled straw, hay, and manure from the winter of 2012 has aged nicely. The compost will provide great nutrients for the pasture and our sheep. We select one of our several fields for spreading and take the day flinging the organic matter to all corners. We have a vintage John Deere spreader from the 1940s that we purchased from a retiring dairy farmer in Douglas County back in 2005. It clanks and clicks and the large drum with the blades whirls madly once the PTO is engaged. It’s a wonderful sight as yards of compost fly like a huge rooster tail into the air and across the pasture. What fun!

New Blood — Meet Lanny

Crawfords' Corriedales

Crawfords’ Corriedales

We spent our solstice weekend traveling to Mount Pleasant, Iowa to find a new ram for the flock. The family of Lanny Crawford, a longtime Corriedale breeder, have been dispersing their flock after Mr. Crawford passed away this past March. We were fortunate to find a handsome two year old ram that we have named Lancelot, aka Lanny, as well as a ewe with two ewe lambs and a ram lamb.

Crawfords’ Corriedales, at Fertile Acres Farm, are a registered flock that have won many show championships across the United States: “[Lanny Crawford] had a number of champions over the years at the National Corriedale Show & Sales and the National Livestock Exposition in Louisville and earned 25 straight champions at the Iowa State Fair. Lanny received the 2011 Lifetime Corriedale Breeder – the Guy Green Trophy at the National Show banquet in Eaton, Ohio.”

Much thanks to Mrs. Johanna Crawford and her daughter Karla Crawford Kerr for their hospitality and willingness to sell a few Lanny’s prized sheep to a couple of crazy shepherds from “way up north.”
